On the nature of Good and Evil: Who are we and where do we stand - the Speaking Eagle speaks

NOTE: This is not a religious post, it is purely philosophical (Though many religious ideas can be derived directly from it). I do not explain the nature of Toaism, though i do draw on a Taoist principle to illistrate a moral-philosophical conjecture.

Before i begin, allow me to explain a bit about what is here. The first portion will be a philosophical conjecture written by me in the form preffered by Lao Tzu (pronounced lau dzee) who wrote the Tao Te Ching (dow te ching) and the Hua Hu Ching (wha hoo ching). It adresses the intrinsic nature of what we consider good and evil and states that although good and evil exist, they are no more intrinsically malicious or good than shadow and light. They simply exist. I will then discuss how this applies to the world we live in and essentially what this implies about how we live. If there is no intrinsic purpose to good and evil, does it matter to which we apply ourselves? Is a man able to apply himself to one or the other, or is this life a unified and chaotic dervish of shades of grey? How does this change how we define ourselves as people? Remember, it's not enough to question who you are, you must question what it means to be who you are.

-------------------
Goodness or justice is likened to heat
Evil or injustice is likened to cold

Cold is the absense of Heat
Evil is the absense of Good
Injustice is the absense of Justice
Each is relative to the other

The purpose of heat is not to melt
the ice or to burn the flesh, it simply is

The purpose of cold is not to cool a pane
of glass or to numb the flesh, it simply does

Thus Justice and Injustice, Good and Evil
are benign forces with no intrinisic purpose

This is called
Benign nature of Good and Evil
----------------------

Now, from what we see here, it is very easy to understand the phrase: "Evil happens when good men do nothing." It is my belief that the dehuminization and decharacterization of good and evil provides more of a basis, not less, to live a moral life. We see that acts of goodness are rare in this universe, since they are finite in quantity and suffering is infinite.  (This is in accordance with the buddhist concept of samsarah- the cycle of suffering.)

It follows that we should live our lives mindful of the coldness (not to do so would be foolish) but focus on things that are good. It is also worthy to act in such a way as to bring out goodness, in oneself and in others. This is the only way we can keep ourselves warm, not to do so would mean that we as a people would perish.

In applying oneself to the side of good or evil, it is not always appearent which is which. This is why we invent religions and listen to those we consider to be wise. Through the wisdom of others, we can learn to apply ourselves to the side of good. In a simple world, good and evil are very clear, but we do not live in a simple world. Many things today are a shade of grey. Almost all people are grey, there are no good people and bad people. Only people who do things. The things they do have impacts with either positive or negative consequences. One party will almost always benefit at the expense of another.

It is my opinion that it takes a great deal of wisodom to navigate through these grey areas. It is best to avoid them, and apply ourselves to what we know to be right. In the grand scheme of things, we will never tip the scales in favor of good, because it requires evil just as evil requires good. They are simply part of the world we live in, each completes the other and each exists within the other. (Consider the Yin Yang) Therefore, seek not eradicate evil, but to sow the seeds of goodness and rightousness.

Franz Ferdinand's 'The Fallen': Great song or the greatest song?

I used to listen to this song and think it was really great, then i read the lyrics while listening to it and now i think it is made of pure whole-grain awesome. I think it speaks to the realities of morality and judgment. At the heart of this song is the issue of RIGHTEOUSNESS which is a virtue that has me simply fascinated as of late. Whatever you believe the nature of righteousness or virtue is, one thing is undeniably true (in my opinion of course): *in the Bill and Ted voice & spirit* This song is righteous!

Plus the video's pretty sweet.

Some say ya' troubled boy
Just because you like to destroy
All the things that bring the idiots joy
Well, what's wrong with a little destruction?

And the kunts won't talk to you
Cause you kissed St. Rollox adieu
Cause you robbed a supermarket or two
Well, who gives a damn about the prophets of Tesco?

Did I see you in a limousine
Flinging out the fish and the unleavened
Turn the rich into wine
As you walk on the mean
Well the fallen are the virtuous among us
Walk among us
Never judge us
Yeah we're all blessed

Up now and get um boy
Up now and get um boy
Drink to the devil and death to the doctors!
Did I see you in a limousine
Flinging out the fish and the unleavened
well Five thousand users fed today
As you feed us won’t you Lead us
to be blessed

So we stole and drank champagne
On the seventh seal you said you never feel pain
"I never feel pain, won't you hit me again?"
"I need a bit of black and blue to be in rotation"

In my blood I felt bubbles burst
There was a flash of fist, an eyebrow burst
You've a lazy laugh and a red white shirt
I fall to the floor, fainting at the sight of blood

Did I see you in a limousine
Flinging out the fish and the unleavened
You turn the rich into wine
Walk on the mean
Be they Magdalen at Virgin you've already been
You've already been we've already seen
That the fallen are the virtuous among us
Walk among us
Never judge us
To be blessed

La la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la...

So I'm sorry if I ever resisted
I never had a doubt you ever existed
I only have a problem when people insist on
Taking their hate and placing it on your name

So they say you're troubled boy
Just because you like to destroy
You are the word, the word is 'destroy'
I break this bottle, think of you fondly

Did I see you in a limousine
Flinging out the fish and the unleavened
To the whore in a hostel
Or the scum of a scheme
Turn the rich into wine
Walk on the mean
It's not a jag in the arm
It's a nail in the beam
On this barren Earth
You scatter your seed
Be they Magdelan or Virgin
You've already been
and you've already seen...

wahoo! wahoo! wahoo!

Yeah! You've already been,
you've already seen
That the fallen are the virtuous among us
Walk among us
Oh if you judge us
We're all damned.

Palin McCain ticket falling apart!

With the addition of the Governor, this ticket has been weak for a while. While most republicans and all democrats questioned the choice, little did we know that the McCain campaign was questioning right along with us. It has been the view of the McCain camp that Palin can't be trusted with the tough tasks such as talking to reporters or answering questions at all. Ever since the disastrous Gibson and Couric interviews, the GOP handlers haven't let her out of their sight. Here's what happens when she does:

But this Palin source acknowledged that Palin is trying to take more control of her message, pointing to last week's impromptu news conference on a Colorado tarmac.

Tracey Schmitt, Palin's press secretary, was urgently called over after Palin wandered over to the press and started talking. Schmitt tried several times to end the unscheduled session.

Personally, i am just fine with a Biden presidency if the worst should happen, but i think if Palin becomes President Of the United States, then i will change my citizenship. I say that because i believe if we allow her to run the state, then we will be in a state of disaster.

We can discuss disastrous policies or extremest views all day, but what i want to get at here is the fact that McCain can't even run a decent campaign. It has thus far been a disaster, and it is only becoming more and more disastrous as he becomes more and more furious. McCain's life has been marked with successes and failures. His failures are hallmarked by his greed and temper. Both are showing now, and both forecast his political doom.

I, for one, cannot let a man run my country if he cannot even make a sensible argument for his candidacy or agree on anything within his campaign.

John McCain disagrees with:
a) His running mate
b) His party
c) The President
d) The other ticket
e) John McCain
f) all of the above

It's F folks, and that's the grade John gets for this mismanaged clusterf**k. Unless you want his clusterf**k to turn into OUR clusterf**k, then vote Obama, its the best way to put country first. Can we now see that McCain and Palin are both incredibly unfit to run our country? Can we pull this together and take back our country from the corrupt and perpetuating politics of today? Can we take the leap, take the chance, and work for a brighter tomorrow? Yes we can.

My sources: Examine the answer

Often during the course of any deep political discussion i am questioned about my sources. My news is seldom watched, almost always read and i get my articles randomly from several feeds that i have on my iGoogle page. I often have a Sarah Palin moment because i dont always remember the source as i read dozens of articles daily and they change from day to day. So here is a list of where i get my news. I will hopefully be able to add to this as i remember, this is a still incomplete list.

Abortion: Here we go

This topic is shaping up to be quite the issue in this election. Lets break down what's going on here.

The first thing I would like to throw light on is the difference between a baby and a fetus. I will use the correct terms here, so let there be no bickering about semantics and loaded words. When you talk about killing a baby, that's loaded rhetoric. When you look at a volcano, you have hot magma coming up from below the crust and erupting as lava. When you have a mommy, she carries a fetus and then gives birth to an infant. Ok? Ok.

Now, we can come back to actual views on abortion later, but first i want to draw another line in the sand. There is a very big difference between being pro choice, and pro abortion. In case there's any confusion, a person who is pro choice believes that it is up the the individual (or their god) to decide wether to abort or not. People who call themselves pro life are advocating government restriction (or banning if you're Sarah Palin) of abortions.

It is entirely possible to be pro choice and anti abortion, or pro choice and pro early abortion, or pro choice and anti late-term abortion. The beauty of democracy is it gives us the opportunities to decide what is right and wrong for ourselves, so long as we bear the consequences.

How does this fit politically? Well lets start first with the republican ticket. John McCain proposed a ban on abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or cases jeopardizing the health of the mother. Sarah Palin supports a ban on abortion. Period. Obama is pro choice.

How does it fit personally? I am a pro choice individual, i believe in a woman's right to choose. I believe its an awful choice to have to make, and i support (as does Obama) education about options that individuals face. As to the actual abortion, upon the 9th week, the fetus begins to show spontaneous movement, and most importantly neurological activity. It is at this part that i believe a person is formed. As it is our ability to think and reason (use of Aristotle's third soul) that makes us human.

I don't know when a person starts to think and feel and have feeling, but i believe that at this point we can. I feel that an abortion after this point is immoral, but i also believe that as humans we must be given the liberty to do the right or wrong thing, otherwise we cannot take responsibility for our successes and failures. If we have no will to choose the things that matter most to what is a person, than i believe that we cease to be people.

So can we make correct, informed choices about abortion that coincide with religious beliefs and still respect the rights and opinions and choices of all people? Yes we can.

Palin on womens rights???

This is a short post, but something's gotte be said. Palin today criticized Obama for being anti-women. Wow, she used a wide range of attack angles to do this, and this was one of her remarks.

"Our opponents think that they have the women's vote all locked up, which is a little presumptuous,” Palin said. “A little presumptuous since only our side has a woman on the ticket.”

What she overlooks is the notion that the side with the woman on the ticket is not necessarily the most pro-woman's rights side. Her flawed logic seems to leave out the fact that their ticket is the only ticket that wants to overturn Roe V Wade. This is a classic women's rights issue and a McCain ticket would literally strip women of this right.

I am losing hair from this election. I may have an ulcer by Nov 4th.
